Designing novel materials for photovoltaic devices is a strategic goal. Doping and defect control is critical to making optoelectronic devices. We still do not understand how to do good defect engineering. It seems to require careful quantum mechanical calculations to find out what the effect of adding a defect to a material will be. The effects of defects extend out for several nanometers in a material, which means that we need to simulate large systems to obtain clear predictions.
